Joanna Mary Jones
1924 to 2012
It is with the deepest of remorse and the fondest joy, that we announce the death of Joanna Mary Jones. She joins Gerald Lewis Jones, her husband of forty-nine years, her sister Peggy, and her parents, Margaret Julia Sherriffs and Albert Smith.
Born on April 23, 1924, Joanna's eighty-seven years of life were a testament to steadfast courage, and devoted care to those that were privileged to know her.
Raised in England, her early years were marked by the strife of World War II. Her constancy and spirit were a product of events straight from the history books, but read like an adventure. While today it sounds fascinating, it was more than reminiscence when Joanna spoke about the bombings of London, strictly following war rations, and quietly, by candlelight, listening to the crackling radio as a young King George VI spoke to the nation.
After falling in love with and wedding a dashing young soldier in the U.S. Army Air Corp, she journeyed to a new country, which has since been her home. She and Gerald began their family in Spokane Washington, where Gerald attended Gonzaga University, and Joanna worked as a secretary. They then spent many years in southern California, after which the family moved to the central coast in 1970 and established a real estate business. Joanna and Gerald built their current home in Paso Robles in 1988. They were blessed with six children, twenty-four grandchildren, and twenty-six great-grandchildren.
Joanna very much enjoyed traveling, visiting a varieties of locales, such as England, Alaska, the Mexican Riviera, and even a gourmet cooking class in Tuscany. A genuine lady, she had discriminating style and taste, in both fashion and behavior.
She was a valued and long-standing member of St. Rose Church where she established close and meaningful relationships and was passionately involved in RCIA; her Thursday morning prayer group in her home highlighted her latter years and included some of her deepest friendships. Joanna was someone who thoroughly enjoyed social activities, and was a regular at Bunco, aqua aerobics, and enjoyed many visits for tea from family and friends
Characteristics which marked Joanna's life included gratitude, for the many ways in which she had been blessed, and abounding love, for family and friends. Our memories of these and her many other attributes, could not be more treasured.
Despite how vividly Joanna lives on in our hearts, she joins many individuals whom she deeply loved, including, her beloved husband Gerald, and for that, we are grateful. While words can never fully express the depths to which we will miss her, our lives will ever show the impact this gracious mother and grandmother has indelibly made.
A viewing and evening vigil will be at the Chapel of the Roses in Atascadero, Sunday, March 11, between 3 to 7pm. A funeral mass will be held at 10 am, in St Rose Catholic Church on Monday, March 12.
