Newt mocks Obama's 'strange' energy policy (Politico)

BURLINGAME, CALIF. ? Newt Gingrich has one answer to President Barack Obama?s proposal to develop more energy-efficient cars and alternative fuels: Drill.

Increased drilling on federal lands and in the Gulf of Mexico is the only way to lower gas prices in the short term, Gingrich said in remarks cast as a response to Obama?s speech on energy earlier this week.

Speaking to California GOP activists for more than 40 minutes, Gingrich said Obama?s position was ?factually false, intellectually incoherent, deeply conflicted on policy and in some places just strange.?

The former House speaker is staking his campaign on halting a rise in gas prices, making it the central part of his platform as an issue he thinks will energize voters.

It?s a risky gamble for a candidate who is trying to stay in the GOP race after watching his poll numbers plummet in recent weeks after a disappointing result in the Florida primary.

Gingrich critiqued several of Obama?s proposals, including a program to reduce gas consumption by improving tires and another to develop energy from biological materials.

?Do you know how weird your worldview has to be to believe that inflating your tires equals drilling,? Gingrich said. ?It?s a little scary that the president is this out of touch with reality.?

He taunted Obama for advocating that consumers should avoid SUVs and then riding in them in his motorcade. And he again ridiculed a proposal to use algae to develop biofuels.

Gingrich insists that he?s not opposed to biofuels, but thinks they are a long-term solution to a short-term problem.

Instead, Gingrich said the United States should open up drilling in parts of Alaska and other federally-owned lands as well as the Gulf of Mexico.

?We have vastly more resources than anyone else in the world,? he said.

Gingrich at times read from prepared remarks, a noticeable departure from his usual speeches that rarely involve notes.

Gingrich repeated a line from Obama?s speech, reading, ?What we do have in this country are limitless sources of energy.?

?Why doesn?t he unleash the American people to develop those unlimited sources of energy that he claims we have?? Gingrich responded.
